Where in Maine you’re most likely to find recalled cars

airbagcarThe CBS 13 I-Team reported Monday night that 225,000 vehicles in Maine have at least one unfixed safety recall — that’s about one car in every five on the road or for sale in our state.

About 50 million vehicles were recalled in 2015.

The importance of getting recall issues fixed was once again highlighted as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently confirmed the death of a 17-year-old Texas girl is linked to a recalled Takata airbag.

Huma Hanif died when a piece of metal fragment from the airbag hit her in the neck, according to the Sheriff’s Department of Fort Bend County, Texas, and the NHTSA.

“Many people in Maine still are unnecessarily risking their lives by not staying informed or taking action when their vehicle is under a recall,” said Larry Gamache, communications director at Carfax.

Carfax has now identified ten places in Maine where you’re most likely to find unfixed recalls:

City Est. % of Vehicles
1. Waterville 21%
2. South Portland 21%
3. Auburn 20%
4. Biddeford 20%
5. Portland 19%
6. Bangor 18%
7. Lewiston 18%
8. Saco 18%
9. Augusta 17%
10. Scarborough 14%
